Makes it sound like it matters which psycho has the ability to kill millions on a whim.
The 2020 presidential election in the USA has already presented a lot of nasty surprises and, in fact, it has split American society into two irreconcilable camps. Obviously, the country is in a serious internal and political crisis. Recent assault on the Capitol Building made by Donald Trump's supporters has clearly shown the gravity of the US current situation that can get out of control at any time, especially in the interim period. Today's riots in the USA are seen by most analysts as the beginning of a very serious process, namely, the all-out civil confrontation. And while American elites are busy preparing for the new President's inauguration, the tension in American society is constantly growing.
Against the background of all these dramatic changes in the US internal policy, the issues of security are becoming the focus of not only national, but also global agenda of our time. Don't forget, the USA has an impressive nuclear arsenal, the existence of which not only offers undoubted opportunities for the US government, but also requires an extremely careful use of it because the risks are too great. The question that arises is how effective is the security system of the US nuclear arsenals in conditions of current political instability and possible loss of the country's controllability? Who will ensure security for the nuclear arsenals if the country falls into chaos caused by mass riots? In whose hands will be a nuclear football and access to US nuclear ballistic missiles' launch codes?
Undoubtedly, the authorities are worried about the security situation in the country. On the eve of the inauguration, the law enforcement agencies intensify security measures, urgently transferring dozens of thousands of the Army National Guard troops to Washington in order to avoid the risk of repeating the assault on the Capitol Building or, even worse, attack on the White House. Meanwhile, a massive army of Donald Trump's followers, including members of the US Antifa movement, gets everybody together for the Million Militia March on the day of President Biden's inauguration. The new President's supporters, among them many not very peaceful activists of the Black Lives Matter movement, will also gather on the streets of American cities not only to celebrate their candidate's victory, but also to face off Trump backers. But even if the inauguration is held without incidents, it'll not be the end of the civil confrontation. American society is divided so much that the new authorities can hardly consolidate it and prevent other mass riots. There are also lots of questions for the US police and military officers who were unable to prevent the assault on the Capitol Building made by the crowds of demonstrators. Moreover, it is not clear whose orders the military will have to obey if the newly-elected authorities are overthrown. The impending chaos in the USA will reset all rules and principles. However, it cannot be excluded that a number of military and law enforcement officers may side with one of the protest camps.
As a result, at any moment the button that launches the US nuclear missiles and other weapons of mass destruction can fall into the hands of those who will act unpredictably. And it is highly stressful. On the one hand, this scenario is a threat to the entire system of international security as we do not know who will want to use this 'nuclear toy' and how they'll wish to do it. On the other hand, just imagine - the hostile forces initiate a nuclear attack on the USA just when the official authorities are losing control over nuclear weapons. It's unclear how the decision on the retaliatory strike can be made if they are given only a few minutes to decide. The US authorities should reflect seriously on this and other issues.
