In the military, you can't disobey an order or talk back. If you go AWOL, you're fucked. That's really what keeps things moving. One couldn't get 100 suitable people in one place if that was a lifelong goal, let alone thousands. Most of them with the right genes are gone, the few that remain (your Brievik/Tarrant types) are socially isolated and can't do shit. They will fritter away, one by one, ultimately ineffective. The veterans are also not good, they are effective within the machine but near useless alone. They saw to that. I've been in hot situations with vietnam era veterans in the ghetto when I was younger and they were scared. When you're alone or with a small group and facing a well armed organization without any structure or support, it separates the wheat from the chaff real quick.
