If they really believed in reducing fossil fuel use they would be gung ho to raise fuel taxes to make up the shortfall. After all, higher fuel prices further encourage people to buy fuel-efficient vehicles. But that's not what they really want, which is why they're not going to raise the fuel tax. Never judge people, and especially politicians, by what they say, only by what they do.
