The price of gas is artificial. They can make it low or high as they wish.
The same with USD, Gold, Bitcoin, minerals... pretty much everything. There is no such thing as price discovery. You would think the Internet would make price discovery easy. You'd be wrong: data is faked and manipulated in order to cheat. If you shop on Amazon and many other websites, for example, the price you find is calculated based on how much they think you'll pay based on strange factors you can't imagine.
Take heating oil, as an example: there is a price that middle men pay to buy it, then there is your price. Your price depends on local competition, if you sign up for auto delivery, how much fuel you buy, how you pay for it and where you live. I spent many hours calling every local supplier in my area because none of them advertised their prices on the internet. The price difference was about 30% among all my options.
