Buddy of mine is NG, he worked the Inauguration mission in 2017. The city was also cut in to sectors with fencing and heavy gates at that time. The difference this year is the number of personnel. He said that 2 people went from his unit in 2017, and this year it was around 22, plus tons of other NG members from across the state.
It is important to see/share/remember images, statements, actions, but it is not helpful to speculate or interpret them incorrectly.
Edit: He did mention lefties out stirring up shit, but my focus was on the physical security measures: The gates are standard.
NG must have been asleep on the job as the inauguration in 2017 saw massive amounts of left-wing domestic terrorism, to which all the authorities on the scene turned a blind eye.
Imagine being armed with military weaponry in DC and not being able to use it against enemies foreign and domestic who are literally within arms' reach.. Seeing how White the NG is, I suspect that the government is just trolling them by putting them in this predicament.
