A ham radio can be gotten pretty cheap. A baofeng uv-5r handheld can be had for under $40.
I have that exact one, I programmed it with chirp but I can really only hear the state patrol and it only scans preprogrammed channels.
I also have a survival ham/cb 20 foot extendable fancypants antenna rolly thing, but I havent tried that yet.
You should be able to hear more and there are tons of how to's on jewtube. Do you have a repeater near you? Repeaterbook.com is where you will find the repeater frequencies in your area. I'm on the edge of a metro area and only a few miles from a repeater so I am "supposed" to be able to hear it all too but I suspect that I too need some time understanding how to program my radio (Tytera MD380) better as I can only hear activity on the Clear Time Slot.
not sure, but I know I have a link to repeaterbook, I got the State Patrol freq from a old website listing official freqs in my town.
So.... to get offa the local channel, I need to link up with the repeaters, and those repeat all the traffic they can hear I assume?
dunno... but you've given me something to chase, if I master this art, I will surely return to advise.
I'm stoked, there is still the logistical problem that in order to Transmit (to speak), one must be licensed. That means the general location and identity of the owner and responsible party is known and registered with the gov. So we can listen or we can get licensed to speak, but who will dare speak when the enemy knows their name and address? That sounds like I think all gov is the enemy, but thats another discussion, we can all agree our gov is not functioning properly and cannot be trusted with our welfare. Thats why this conversation started.
I am leaning to LoRa because its unlicensed, but it wont do a lotta good if no one else is on it. Ofc, I understand, should the worst occur, none of us will be terribly worried about the FCC, so yea I'm buying all the different gear and trying to make myself proficient with it.
We should have a sub/verse/whateveritscalledhere, for this topic, where we can share these details and aggregate technical documents/vids/books.
