When having an argument or debate and referring to historical occurrences that mimic the present - you may be accused of 'whataboutism'. This is an invented term used to cast all history aside - both recent and distant.

It is exhausting referring to the past as an example and hearing a young liberal say - "That's just whataboutism....it doesn't apply to this situation."

It's a Russian trick. It was perfected during Reagan's time in office as a way to deflect from their own scandals. Of course democrats would do it because democrats are the party of "communism lite 2.0". They're going to employ that tactic.
