The only people backing it are you and I. Any money involved was almost certainly for an anterior motive to sway the movement in a specific direction for someone's benefit -- and sway they tried MY GOD they tried. It didn't work though (not entirely), because mainstream is irrelevant now. The grip of control on shaping human thought has been shattered by the internet. There is no longer a common or shared identity among people; there is no TV or music that we all commonly enjoy.
The abyss? I have embraced it long ago.
If only you and I see it, that'll be enough. Eight upvotes, eight people saw it. More probably 80 or so. Ten or twenty threads like this, maybe 800-1600 people will have seen the idea, which means statistically, even if we never met, you'll know somebody who knows somebody, etc, that has heard this idea.
You seed an idea on the net, and if you push it enough, some people will try. It only takes a few of us persuing an idea like this for the right to be funded for years.
Then I'll drink to fortune and glory and be done with it.
It's not just us though.
Ideas are fluid through society. If enough people think a thing, they will spread that thing too and so it multiplies exponentially. We have had the advantage of slowly spreading that message for years before all of this nonsense came about. In a way, /our/ got in AHEAD of the plan, nullifying it.
