I don't think he's a national treasure, I think he found himself in an extraordinarily shitty situation and did everything he could exactly right. Remarkable for a teenager.
What makes his case interesting is how clear cut a case of self defense it was, and well documented with video evidence his situation is and how demonized he is by the media and brainwashed millions.
It's the perfect litmus test for others.
Have nothing but bad/incorrect things to say about him, it's clear that you're a brainwashed, or lazy useful idiot for the media and its owners.
Disagree with traditionally right wing or second amendment stances on things but still admit he did nothing seriously wrong: You might be salvageable.
