True. His selling of English government bonds signaled to the rest that the English lost at Waterloo. This made them all panic sell, and Rothschild bought them all back for pennies in one swoop.

My question is why didn't the English just buy these themselves?

Nations should have strategic defense funds for protecting against just this sort of financial attack.

I think it is obvious, as an emerging front in warfare, that finance would be used as an alternative to open conflict between nation states.
