For anyone who's not familiar, there is the pocket veto option. Once the bill hits the president's desk (it hasn't yet), he has ten days to sign it or return it to Congress.

Now normally if he returned it to Congress they'd just override him because muy pork. However, if Congress isn't in session...he can't return it to Congress. Which means the bill is vetoed whether Congress likes it or not. Congress is required to adjourn on January 3rd for the next Congress. Sundays don't count. Federal holidays don't count.

So even if the bill hits his desk TODAY.

Day 1: Dec 23rd

Doesn't Count: Dec 24th (Federal Holiday)

Doesn't Count: Dec 25th (Federal Holiday)

Day 2: Dec 26th

Doesn't Count: Dec 27th (Sunday)

Day 3: Dec 28th

Day 4: Dec 29th

Day 5: Dec 30th

Day 6: Dec 31st

Doesn't Count: Jan 1st (Federal Holiday)

Day 7: Jan 2nd

Doesn't Count: Jan 3rd (Sunday)
