Once in high school my psychology teacher assigned us a big project that I thought was really dumb and didn't have anything to do with psychology. So I wrote him a letter explaining why I thought it was dumb, hoping to get an alternate assignment.
He gave me an A on the project and said the letter counted as doing the project.
The lesson I learned is: it's better to invalidate a faulty question and let them reask rather than playing by their rules
