Maybe his vehicle crashed (shot at the engine with .50 typically), so he got a car crash essentially, but didn't get hit directly by .50 caliber rounds

He appears to be the only one wounded, rest got killed. They mention .50 cals but it doesn't mean there was just that, grenades also, not that it's any better when it blows at your face, probably other calibers involved, 9mm and 7.62 typically but that's just a guess. And they don't say he got wounded by being shot, so there's that

Edit: notice the impact on the foreground, near the car's headlight, it's not .50, definitely, so chances are, there were other calibers involved
