I agree with your assessment, something bigger happened there. Like USSR and Cuba, VZ was on the NWO chopping block for some time (there was a guy who wrote about being a hatchet man a decade or so ago that talked about this before it happened). I recently watched the documentary about Canada's Oil Industry? It seems too close to the first half of a similar story.
