I think the plan is to sit on the oil fields until Assad's forces can sit on the fields. If that's the end game, then I'm okay with it so long as we do leave. The best thing we could have done is to not have gotten involved with the Arab Spring in the first place. But the Deep Staters in the State Dept always seem to know best even though their track record is utter shit.
