I believe he tried to do the right thing. But he could never let go of his leftist roots. But he did his best to warn us of what they had planned and how they would approach it.

He clearly stopped playing ball, so they tried to assassinate him and eventuality ended him with the CIA's program for Iran-Contra.

BTW, Hinckley used exploding .22 "Devastator" rounds. The one in Reagan's thorax failed to explode, thankfully. Also, because of this assassination attempt, they changed the surname of the "Greatest American Hero" show for the rest of the season. And I believe it happened on Oscar Night, or the day before to be exact.
