If they printed an absurd amount of money all at once, inflation would explode (to million dollar bill territory). The tax base still does underwrite the debt/printing, even if that relationship is increasingly indirect and asymmetric. I would really like to believe that my taxes don't help my traitorous government in any way (e.g. paying for the replacement of my own people), but that would be oversimplification.
