I think that has more to do with people asking to take our enemies in as refugees. If we drone strike cities in foreign lands and then invite their citizen to live among us, of course there is entanglement.
I don't think this would be an issue if we'd openly embrace imperialism (for example, stop pretending we're over there to spread democracy) and lose empathy for people we have little in common with.
With imperialism there are two paths:
1) You go whole hog and completely annihilate the system your taking over down to the last man. This doesnt work out because to do that you destroy everything no spoils of war. Additionally everyone else sees you do this and immidately forms alliances against you potentially to the point they rival your own power because you became an existential threat.
2) You dont go whole hog you absorb the competing system into your own after a short military conflict and concession. Well you see the problem with this? You end up integrating this alien culture into your own. Now they have power within your system, voting rights, some level of autonomy, there's cultural population exchange, people start mixing because of proximity and necessity now to integrate these two systems etc etc... Eventually the empire does this enough to the point that there is no core dominant culture or value system and is rife with foreign entanglements and it destroys itself.
What is left today of the aztec empire and religion?
Afghanistan used to be a buddhist country. How much buddhism is left in Afghans living there today? Isn't it even wild to consider, that Afghanistan used to be ruled by buddhists?
And in other cases you may think of, how ruthless were the conquerors? Christians allowed Vikings to live, if they converted to Christianity. Still, beyond our days being named after viking gods and some rites, I don't think much is left of the Viking culture. And that was merely a conversion, albeit a bloody one, not a full blown genocide.
It's possible to erradicate a culture. And if you don't take pity on them or take uncastrated slaves, perhaps even to erradicate the people themselves.
