You really start to get good at reading the meta narratives, which kind of fucks up the movies. If you look at all the "costuming" and cosplay in the movie what we are seeing is a deeeeply deeeeply disturbed director that has a desperate need to get out of their body and try on other bodies the way you would try on costumes.
