I've said it before, if I could go buy a 2-seat runabout with a 100 mile range and a side-street speed limit for about 5-6k, I'd go do it right now. Something like that is ideal for rolling around the city.
But not at the 30000+ with barely more range some of those clunkers offer.
Yes, exactly. Something the size of a Fiat or a Smart car with batteries, in a city with lots of solar access like Los Angeles, Phoenix, Denver, etc. are ideal. But to push that kind of car on someone out in the boonies of the Dakotas, Texas, or Minnesota? You're insane.
It's like the battery tech backing all this renewable shit. We have access to cheap battery tech that would provide near 24/7 energy, including sand/brick batteries, iron rust batteries, and newer calcium ion tech, all which can be built with locally sourced materials for pennies per KWh. But no: They keep falling back on huge battery centers fitted with Lithium Ion. Literally one of the WORST battery types for large storage solutions.
Some ideas from places like India are good ones, like replaceable Aluminum batteries that you go into a place to swap within 5 minutes, and offer 700-1000 miles of range. But god forbid we listen or pay attention to any idea that isn't backed by democrat special interests
A cheap Smart Car with batteries. Exactly. And a swap at 700 miles, assuming self-discharge is low, would keep me going for months.
The issue is, the market isn't organically pushing these and as such they have no interest in addressing market need. The push is entirely about wealth redistribution, propping up China's economy, destroying our economy, and ultimately total control over travel. Which means they've provided every reason to resist EVs and no legitimate reason to support them.
Aptera basically is what your describing, but still in the $30k+ price range.
Solar rechargeable, so ideally you wouldn't need to plug it in as much, assuming you reside in a reasonably sunny region and park outside.
reasonably sunny region
I live in Ohio. The "Sun" is a mythical beast that lives with dragons on the moon.
