It seems if you couldn’t afford your kids, you gave them up essentially to foster homes. It seems there were no “gov paying for your kids education / stuff etc”.

And it seems people thought this pretty normal and obvious.

If you think how it would have to be if government wasn’t giving you free shit for your kids, you’d have to give up to whatever charity would take care of them if you couldn’t afford them.

This seems like the natural way about doing these kinds of things.

Does anyone know about this time era and if this is how it was done?

Same. We retired and downsized. Cashed out the 401K, bought a house on a huge lot in a small town, less than 2K pop. No debt and a WELL stocked pantry and a good sized garden. Have extended family nearby that have acreage and raise a few cattle and pigs. Damn, just had a flash back of the 60s show "Green Acres".
