It's not useless, it changes the label under your upvotes/downvotes count.

It's there just to remind you about how shamefully lame your username is so that you feel deep regret and hang your head in sorrow for a moment of silence.

Are you referring to the username at the top of the results page? The one about your user level, post tally, etc.?

when you click your username on the main page you go to a page where you can view your posts and comments and your username is at the top of that verticle list. It's edit user info then username then view post then view comments. Well when you click the username on that page it brings you nowhere else so it's kind of a waste of bandwidth to keep it there.

That's the expected behavior.

When you click your username in the sidebar of your account's preferences, it sends you back to your user profile.
