It just seems inconsistent with how one side of the conversation is deleted from the sent portion, but the received part in the inbox is untouched.

I would think either all messages, sent and received should stay accessible or also run the delete script through the inbox as well.

Can either of those possibilities be implemented?

This works for users with working accounts, and currently shows the surviving side my my messages from diy-guy on one page. I guess the sent messages were stored under his inbox, and when his account was deleted everything inside went with it.

Still, good progress on bringing both sides of the conversation together!
