so I noticed there were site clones for years. like there used to be several websites that ran using the livejournal system, then more recently there came image hosting sites that all ran on the exact same system. i remember 'slimgur', that was one of them.
and there's phuks, another site just like this. i figured if it said 'phuks given' here, that was a sign this site is exactly the same as voat and phuks.co.

It is. Reddit is(or at least was) open sourced. Like gnu, which means that if you use it you must also be open sourced, essentially. So all of these sites that copy reddit are legally required to publish their source. So, if the dev on one site spruces something up or makes it more secure, the devs on the other sites will copy that code. Nothing immoral, everything is open sourced. That's part of the point of open source. Not the only point, but part of it.
