Feature Request:

Multiple stickies. I tend to do a lot of subjects that I would like to keep at the top of the sub. One is too few, four is too many. Two is not enough and three is perfect.

It's a bit of work, but it could be something that sub owners or moderators could configure (with say a choice between 0 and 5). My preference is 3.

3 stickies stops me from just stickying everything and makes me consider them more carefully - 'cause I'll sticky all sorts of things if left to my own devices.

Example:

I'm currently in the middle of two different educational series about guitar playing (and performing). I also do a series about guitarists better than Hendrix. Having all three of the latest submissions stickied would be a very nice way to keep things organized.

I'm not actually sure why, but folks seem to like my writing style. So, I try to provide some original content. As you can see from the site, I'm not the least bit interested in doing it for profit - I just like to write and figure this is a good way to get people to consider learning to play a musical instrument. (Learning to play has mental health benefits, is constructive, and is good for improving your relationships with other people. It's a ton of work, possibly expensive, and usually doesn't pay well - but it's still fantastic.)

So, I'd like three stickies, please.

Note:

This doesn't force anyone to use all three (or more) stickies. If it's a configurable option, then that's even better but I can see how that'd be a bit too much work to put high on the priority list. Just because there are three available, you're not actually required to use three.

Thank you for your consideration of my request! (And anyone who disagrees with my idea is a degenerate! It's fucking brilliant!)

That's a good idea. I'll take a look at the sticky code and see if I can easily add 2 more stickies.

Of course it's a good idea! It came from me, didn't it?!? Sheesh!

One a more serious note, I find the stickies valuable and make (what I think is) good use of them. This is typical of how I use them:

The subs I take part in are usually geared towards something that's theoretically educational and having stickied content is a good way for me to prioritize stuff. It helps me keep things organized.

Ideally, it'd be owner/moderator selectable and offer 0 to 5 (or similar), but that seems like a bit of extra work for not a lot of gain. I'm not sure that, at least at this point, many would take advantage of that.

By the way, PMYB2 was going to post the existent code to a Git repo but was having issues with it. I figured I'd spin up a VPS for you two to hammer on, but it appears that you now have a test server? If that's the case, I'd still like the existent source code so that I can hammer on it and check it out myself. I may be able to post patches that'll come in handy - saving you both some time. My code is generally clean, just wordy.

I'd also like to be able to offer some defense. I've seen some goats complain that Poal is stealing passwords. One even claimed that their Voat account was "hacked" after using the same password at both sites. My guess is that such is probably nearly impossible - as I'm assuming the passwords are not stored as text but are stored as a result from salting and hashing.

At least I'm assuming the code takes such precautions. As mentioned, I haven't actually installed it or even downloaded it.

If you really want to keep stuff in sight, I suggest you to use the sidebar to organize a list of posts with a custom CSS (I can help you with that).

Yeah, I've considered that - but they rotate with frequency. I figure the sidebar should be used for things that are more long-term and the stickies for things that are for short-term use.

In my head, stickies are for things lasting no more than 7 to 14 days. Posts are temporal, and frequent - with a life from 1 to 3 days. Sidebar is for things with longevity, meaning things that I'd expect to be existent for > 6 months and not subject to frequent modification.

With that, thanks for the reminder. I do need to hack away at customizing some of the subs with hard links to content. My CSS skills are a bit rusty, but I may even look at making colorful themes for some of them. Though, frankly, that seems like a bit of overkill and I'd only do it 'cause people seem to like it. I'm actually quite pleased with the default dark theme. Y'all did a good job with that.
