I will admit though, the first version of this post was a lot angrier and had an almost boomeresque usage of caps lock. So maybe I am not baring my fangs all the way.
No, , I am not going to get used to it.
For those unfamiliar, the topbar is the element where you'll see such interesting acronyms as SIF and PIF, as well as the beginning of your list of subs you've subscribed to.
The update which introduced SIF and PIF (and bizarrely changed modmulti to "multimod" -- whatever that is) is one of the few poal updates that actually made the site design worse.
The reasons SIF and PIF are bad are as follows:
They are clunky, awkward acronyms that make the site less intuitive to a new user . Brevity could be achieved better ways which I describe below the next line break. Further, SIF is less a less accurate descriptor than it's predecessor, "more," because the dropdown includes not all 'subs I follow,' but only the ones not listed horizontally in the topbar.
SIF is a continuation of a list (your subscriptions). Because it is a continuation of a list, it should be represented after the beginning list items. But by placing it to the left of the first items, you are essentially starting the list in the middle.
In what order do we read in the western world?
Frosty will tell you: Left to right and then top to bottom.
So where does the first item in a list go?
Frosty will tell you where: above or to the left of all other list items. The second item in the list would either go to the right of the first item, or below it.
Since the topbar is a wide element, the subs will initially be listed horizontally. Sub 1, sub 2, and on to sub k (which is the point at which the topbar runs out of room).
Then, and this is very important, if the list needs to continue in a dropdown, the link to that dropdown would be TO THE RIGHT OF SUB K!!!!!
Here is how I envision the topbar order. It's only a suggestion but I include it because it's somewhat useless to point out problems without presenting an alternative that would be better:
All | New | Top | F | M
This should be the order of the initial topbar links. The rest would be the same (i.e. edit button, then sub 1, sub 2 ... sub k). And following sub k would be a "more" link which would be a dropdown list of subs k - n (n being the last of all subs you subcribe to).
A little more about the topbar menu items on the left side:
Only the first letter of each word should be capitalized.
F would represent users you follow.
M is your modmulti (or "multimod" -- whatever that is)
I've added a Top link.
Each of these should be a clickable link, but also a dropdown should appear when your mouse hovers over the link. The options for All and New are gonna be New and Hot. (edit: Dropdowns for All and New are not really necessary) The options for F and M are gonna be New, Hot, and Top. The options under Top are Day, Week, Month, All. If you click the link it'll just take you to the default page. For example default page for "Top" will be Day, but if you use the dropdowns you can travel to a different page like Week.
edit:
So, all together, the topbar should be organized the following way:
All | New | Top | F | M | [editbar button] | sub 1 | sub 2 | ...| sub k | More (subs k - n)
