I can get the alt characters by pausing while holding down the key - kindle (android) with talktype app for the keyboard. Can android phones use this app for the keyboard?

How did you do it in order to ask the question?

If you are using a computer with a numeric keypad these are called Alt Key Codes. You simply hold down the Alt key and type in specific numbers on the keypad. Ex: Alt + 0153 = ™ / Alt + 0162 = ¢ / Alt + 0169 = © / Alt + 0174 = ® etc.
