She was old when I first visited 15 or so years ago, looking to have my long hair cut short.

After 6 years longhair, I didn't know how to have it cut short. She spent most of an hour helping me figure it out, cutting back slowly. I've had the same hair cut from her since.

She wore a mask during the 'pandemic' phase, but I think it was just to keep the business open.

Now she is very old, maybe a full foot shorter now compared to 15 years ago. Steps only in short shuffles but still works and gets around.

Normally, she will tell me to tilt my head this and that way. This time I could tell it was no longer easy for her, as her method changed noticeably. She was cutting my hair as best as possible, for the last time.

This wizened old crone, with leg warmers and no glasses gently but firmly grabbed my head and tilted it wordlessly each time and I yielded acccordingly to each motion.

It was a perfect cut, and we looked each other in the eyes afterward.

I'm gonna have to find a new barber next year. I wished her a Merry Christmas.

Did you tip same or more?

I tipped favorably for the session where she figured out my hairstyle, which she accepted humbly. I attempted to tip on subsequent visits but she refused and always charged the least in town.

In respect I always made appointments and would show up 10-20 minutes early to check in. This year I found her taking naps awaiting my arrival and felt bad for being too early.

She always said I had great hair to work with, and I always arrived freshly showered with my hair washed twice. Early on I'd show up in work clothes and mussed hair and she directed me to the washing station. It was a salon more than a barber shop.

As she aged I respected the visits more, making sure I was clean and in good health. This is the best ending to the story I could hope for

This is partially why I cut my own hair now. Only shitskins are barbers now. I shave my head bald instead of going to a barber. I refuse to go to a hair stylist. I don't have enough hair to style anyhow.

The memories of going to a barber with my dad are all I have left of the experience.

Did you bless her with a big tip?

I remember probably the last time I went to my local barbershop ran by whops. I was sitting there waiting and I overheard the guy in the chair getting his hair cut talking to the barber. His son had been killed in a motorcycle accident a few days before.. Hence the haircut. And he was just casually talking about it to the barber it was surreal.
