Just look at that patina. It almost seems impossible in the ground. I have an old silver half dollar that's achieved a similar finish on one side, it's never been underground.

this article has a shot of the sword I didn't see in other articles: https://www.heritagedaily.com/2023/06/well-preserved-3000-year-old-sword-found-in-germany/147628

I guess I'm wondering if this is too good to be real...

Funny side note from when I studied Bronze and Iron in high school. Bronze, at least in the early iron age and well into the roman empire, was actually a FAR superior weapon metal than base line iron and early forms of steel. Even in weapon tests today, Bronze can hold it's own against various forms of steel, including what we think was Damascus. Literally the only reason it fell out of favor was the PITA it was to obtain the two base ingredients, since they rarely appear near each other. It's also the largest reason for the fall of both the Egypitan and Greek empires: All their enemies had to do was cut the tin/copper supply lines, and they were fucked. Iron has the benefit that you can literally find a supply ANYWHERE on the planet, and even a shitty iron sword is better than nothing.

Neat. I'm gonna read up on that.

This is just one video, but I like this guys tests on a lot of weapons. Speaks volumes of what this metal can do

Kinda sorta. Bronze could be better if preserved, but iron tools and weapons are easier to maintain and easier to acquire as you mentioned. Bronze "disease" couldnt be scrubbed off as easily as rust.

It was highly dependent on who forged it. Let's take steel out of the equation here, Bronze V Iron, there's no contest. Iron is soft, holds a crap edge, and rusts. Bronze is cast, can be recast to restore an edge, and if hammered by a skilled smith, is strong as hell. When you start to add steel into the equation, Bronze is still a strong performer, especially in the early eras of Steel. It's easy to forget that modern steel is NOT what they used. Steel foraging is a MAJOR alchemy science and was far from perfected back during those eras. Bronze, on the other hand, had strength on par with most ancient steels, was easier to work on overall, and by and large was easier to mass produce (assuming you could get the raw ingredients)

Not all smiths used the same concentration of tin, which means not all bronze was equal. Iron is more universal in a way. Bronze was shifted out of the way the same age steel was slowly being produced for the same people; nobles and ancient clans. As long as logistic lines were intact, bronze was used, but tin being always in Britannia and some in Spain led to a demand of maintaining the supply lines well preserved.

Roman steel was perfected the same rough age bronze was completely phased out. Only brass remained as it required less tin and isnt as strong. In Britannia however, whitesmithing remained an art.
