Honestly didn't have any heating on my bike for hands, body or feet for budgets reasons and I can tell you it was more than painful a lot of the time. Plain old layers don't cut it and I had to go through stretches of numbness in my hands just to overcome the cold.
Just thinking about it makes me think I'm a fucking nutter.

Haha, I've road over the mountains in 0° degrees once with a previous bike with no heat. I had 3 layers of gloves and it was like you said, fucking misery. No more of that for me, I'm a fair weather wimp now.
