Only hooWHite men could design and build that.

I wonder who tightens that little cap that holds the propeller on. He must have big hands.

ship propeller

It’s called a screw damnit

Whats the difference between a prop and a screw?

Whats the difference between a prop and a screw?

No fucking idea. I just remember in the Navy we always called it a screw and yelled at anybody who called it a propeller lol.

That's one of the most navy answers I could imagine.

Most naval ships have CPPs (Controllable Pitch Propellers) = meaning the blades of the propeller move to control the speed better.

A lot of merchant ships have fixed blades on the prop to cut down on the need for maintenance.

about 15-20 years ago here in oz there was a thing where it turns out our submarines were too 'noisy' and they couldnt work out why.

one of the things they did was get Kockums who built the propellors to send over a new one to be studied by our defence research agency.

the thing arrives in a massive nondescript box on the back of a truck, but when its unloaded and unpacked no one who didnt have the relevant DoD clearance was allowed near it because top secret military stuff.

thing is on the site they sent it to they didnt actually have anywhere indoors to keep it stored, so they promptly unpacked it outside, and left it there for about 6 months, where it would have been spotted by anything flying overhead from commercial aircraft to fuckin satellites.

... oh and then there was the 'sensitive' chemical storage area that you werent meant to know what was in there but could go online and get a full inventory in less time it would have taken to be told to mind your own fucking business....

So did they figure out why they made so much noise?

[–] 2 pts

Yes. It's a propeller spinning in the water.

[–] 1 pt

What kind of witchcraft is that?

[–] 0 pt

As compared to other propellers spinning in water?

kek i just checked that out because i didnt know the answer, its a massive paragraph i wont copypasta but the opening is enough to give you an idea of where it goes -

During the year 2000, an unusual meeting took place with a next door neighbor (Francis 'Frank' Smith) of the then HMAS Stirling Naval Base commander. He was an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (originally trained at Government Aircraft Factories Fisherman's bend) who had been aware of the fluid dynamics issues of the Collins class for some time, purely by interest and observation on television. After a lengthy discussion, he was invited to discuss and demonstrate where possible, his observations at the Stirling Naval Base with Navy and Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) staff who were there at that time as part of an investigative group. He showed on a white board...

tl;dr nosey aircraft engineer neighbour of Naval commander solves submarine noise.

Apparently tho, the US/Russian sub detection gear is that dialed in to each other the Collins class was still able to fuck with the USN during excercises

Too much work, no street view footage?

I would prefer a banana to scale, this is too confusing.
