National Parks are a perfect place for crazy people to operate. If you dont give a shit about society and are gross as hell, you can camp out there forever and scavange off campers. Youll also be able to kill people that are out there by themselves with impunity. Everyone will assume they died of exposure vs being murdered. The odds of bodies being found are really low if you hide them at all.

Also a lot of it I'm sure is what people expect too. A lot of people are physically able to do a 20 mile hike over two days, but they dont have the skills or mind to be able to do it. 99.99% of people will be fine regardless, if theyre prepared, but youre just one bad choice a way from certain death if youre way out in the woods. Factor in the huge numbers of people that go out, and you have a lot of missing people on your hands.

I was on a 14 mile day hike this one time(desert southern colorado end of summer), and I forgot to grab my extra water, and only had what was in my little sucker thing that fits in my back pack, towards the end I wasnt sure how far from the car I was, I was really thirsty, I started to panic and push myself way harder than I should have. I started feeling my heart go crazy, and contimplated going off trail down hill to a place I knew there was water probably 2 miles away. Instead I just told myself Ill be fine if I dont push myself, I sat down under a tree for thirty minutes to cool off, and kept going to where I figured the car should be after my heart beat got back under control. The car was only like 1/4 mile from where I rested. If I had pushed myself and rushed off trail to the water I could have had heatstoke and depending on where I went down, never found off trail.
