Ya, well, that is a thingy called a springy green branch full of thorns that is not user friendly to hold like you want, so I just laid it down near the scale for reference.

I suspect that you're over-complicating it; roll out the tape on a table and lock it, thus freeing up one hand or lay the prickly thing down..
No need for extra hands or buttcheeks holding stuff..
