I have funny story about thorns. Doesn't add much to the picture. I moved into a rent house when I was younger that had a group of rose bushes that had not been properly maintained. They grew into an ugly gigantic combined shrub about 25 feet long. I decided I was going to fix it and went to hacking away. Had a branch swing back and a thorn went straight into my areola (I'm a guy. Tiny little area). Hurt like hell to pull out and then swelled up like a bitch. Interesting experience. The rose bushes turned out great though and had huge roses the next season.
