The word was also rhyming slang for 'hag,' which was often used as a comic term of abuse on TV and children's comic books. Yeah it's a common word in the UK. At least it used to be. Most couches actually had tags saying they were "fag proof" meaning if you fell asleep with a cigarette it wouldn't light it on fire.
