Phoenecians, a race of sea-faring swindlers
So slave traders.
So slave traders.
And so much more - spices, gems, and, most importantly, fake histories.
You see, whenever a coup would occur and a king would be overthrown, the new king would write the old kings out of history entirely, and the Phoenicians would sell fake histories-in-a-box that made it look like your family had been in power for 10 generations while your country thrived.
We only caught them now because they literally didn't bother changing the names or dates of the histories they sold - they would sell the same histories to multiple kings. Our modern historians had choked over this for decades, until the idea broke in the 1970s that they were forgeries (a very taboo subject to historians). The cite for this is Fomenko, who has done a lot of work in this area. If you are curious, even Isaac Newton tried to solve the jewing-of-history problem. (cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk) Long story there, but very interesting, if you want more.
EDIT: Here is the cite for fake histories, (anatolyfomenko.com) by Fomenko, but it is a huge text, and image sources are elsewhere on the site. This link is a synopsis (chronologia.org).
