The natural resources of DR Congo that is the size of mainland western Europe which include diamonds, oil, cobalt, copper and rare elements used in electric cars & smartphones, have been fought over for decades.

  • Last April, 13 rangers were murdered in what park officials described as a "ferociously violent and sustained" attack by another armed group.

  • In January, six rangers, patrolling the park's boundary on foot, were killed in an ambush by militias. All of those who died were aged between 25 and 30.

  • Last week rebels were accused of killing the Italian ambassador to DR Congo, his security guard and driver in an attack within the park.

The attacks come at a turbulent time when the heavily armed and notorious M23 militia were advancing in the region, while British oil company was granted permission from the government in Kinshasa to drill for oil on the park's land.

The oil company condemned the attacks and denied any involvement. .
