I'm not sure. I've heard that Saudi Arabia and Qatar want to build a gas pipeline through Syria to Europe, which Assad didn't agree to. So the Wahabis financed violent muslims to remove Assad. Turkey is on the side of the Saudis.

Another reason for the "civil war" was that the so called Arab spring also came to Syria. This allegedly "democratic uprising" extremely destabilized Lybia and also helped the muslim brotherhood to come to power in Egypt, for example. I think in reality, the protests only removed dictators who at least kept their countries peaceful. The power vacuums were often filled with muslim extremists.

Israel probably supported this development. They regularly bomb Syria and supported the "rebels" (ISIS etc.). A destabilized Syria brings them one step closer to a greater Israel (Oded Yinon plan). They already succeeded in annexing the Golan hights in south western Syria.

Anyways, the conflict was not organic. A few years ago I talked to some Syrians who told me that at that time, foreign jihadis were flowing into Syria from Turkey and other countries, because they hoped to establish some kind of caliphate. The "civil war" was as artificial as the migrant flow into Europe.
