I trim my fingernails down really short like this but I do a much better job. I do welding and landscaping and have done construction work most of my adult life. However, I find it odd that his cuticle has never been pushed back in his life. On construction jobs the cuticle will fray at the corners and start being irritating and bleed so I carefully push them back and trim them.

I keep my nails short because if I don't dirt and grime build up and make them uncomfortable. That thumb and the hands attached to it have never done any useful labor.

Keeping short nails is one thing, I do the same, but having it cut down beyond its natural limit and exposing the underlying meat should land the offender in a gulag.

I actually have to cut mine this short otherwise filth builds up and drives me crazy. I think maybe from digging in dirt while landscaping and when on welding jobs wearing hot sweaty gloves all the time promotes bacteria growth so under the nails it's itchy and has a build up of skin and grunge. This guy's thumb nail looks crazy short because his cuticle has extended out over the nail.

Also, he could be inbred from the looks of that thumb morphology.

I get down and dirty as much as anyone, trimming my nail down after there's grime stuck in there does not require mutilating it beyond the meat.

He needs to leave his nail alone and let it grow further out and bond with the meat. Sounds like you should do that, too.
