It is used to strip bark off of trees down the the outer layer of sapwood. You sit on the log and pull it towards you while keeping the tool at a horizontal angle, start at the end just under the bark and you can get a log length peel of bark. The reason for taking the bark off is the log will cure without a lot of heartwood cracking also known as checkering.
