Haha so they called me back since I left a message and it felt like an interrogation. It ended with them speculating if I was a troll and said we will take the down payment now or we cannot book the private reservation. I asked why and they said they've been victims of "abuse of reservations".

Ask if they charge kitchen appreciation fees (startpage.com), require credit cards to hold reservations (startpage.com) or have $100 per guest dining minimum (startpage.com) and so on.
