Death is really over rated, I mean in terms of punishment, once it's done it's over, it's the end of pain, at least in this world
Being crippled/maimed in a particularly gruesome way, and having to actually live throughout the rest of your life with the physical and psychological sequels it implies, now that's suffering, that's punishment
