Started by Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach in the late 19th Century during the Weimar Republic. It was a product of the Weimar culture and Lebensreform. But the focus on "racial health" and keeping the body healthy won the discussion: Only through sports, good nutrition and the steeling of the naked body in wind and weather could the Deutsche Volkskörper be strengthened and prepared for possible wars. The SS magazine "Das Schwarze Korps" advertised a naturist book with the lines: "We want a strong and joyful affirmation of body awareness, because we need it to build a strong and self-confident race."

The "Police Ordinance on the Regulation of Bathing" allowed nude bathing - issued in 1942. Even in the middle of the war, the Germans were not prudish.
