People today tend to view the past throught their own moral lens, without considering that customs were different centuries ago, at the time this fairy tale is set in. Even in the 19th century it was common for girls in their early teens to get married. Not unusual -- common. Many girls were married at fourteen. Many boys were holding down full-time jobs in mines and factories at fourteen. People matured much earlier in past centuries. They didn't have the luxury of behaving like spoiled brats into their 30s, as they do today. When they hit their teens, they were out of the house and on their own, sink or swim. Disney probably knew this stuff, but wanted to make Snow White look older to avoid shocking his not-well-informed audience.
Children back then didn’t have media and useless distractions to dumb them down and subvert their maturing.
Where was her age stated in the movie? Was she aged up from the original story or did they keep her age and make her look older? Regardless having a fourteen year old looking girl get married is weird, it makes sense to have her age look more appropriate. Hardly proof of pedophillia considering the intention is the opposite (make the love story about a more mature person rather than an immature person)
As the person above said, applying our modern morality to stories set in the fucking 17th century is just silly. Times change, morality changes.
Girls today are different than they were 300 years ago in a number of ways. We also have a better understanding of sexuality and the damage that promiscuity at a young age can cause. Hell, I think even our ancestors who engaged in these marriages knew- that's why they valued virginity and purity. They observed that women who whored around tended to be unstable wrecks that nobody wanted to deal with. They observed that the well-mannered young ladies who married at 14, as a virgin, tended to grow into the role of mother far better than a whore would.
Of course, the life expectancy back then was a good deal lower than today. Back then, they were in a rush to reproduce, because most people don't make it out of their fucking 40s-50s unless they are rich.... and even they died in droves from shit that is absolutely trivial to us today. Today, there is no need for there to be a rush to impregnate a girl at 14 years old- that's not even when she's best suited for bearing a child! Early 20s is the time in current year, it seems. Interestingly, non-pedos tend to find women in that age range the most attractive- any younger and they are basically children.
