Assuming they had DNA to begin with...to compare it to. The defendants could have denied to go along with police so as not to incriminate themselves..without stating as much. That also assumes the much smaller parts would be found with any intact DNA left. I could go on...

Yes, there is no guarantee that the DNA is in a database, but there also is none that there isn't, so making a conscious decision to think you will evade capture by dispersing the parts isn't too smart. Also, they can cull DNA many, many years after a body is dumped.
