Full disclosure, I know nothing of this case and have no interest in defending the guy who got arrested - I have no opinion on the matter, because I have not done my own DD. If caught red handed, the guy needs to swing.
With that said, I implore everyone to also use this as a good opportunity to remember - that ever-increasing techno-tyranny, and backdhoors and/or exploits in so many Internet-connected things.. it is extremely easy for all sorts of players to intentionally blackmail people - IE "State Actors" like an alphabet or thinktank, to just a bunch of for-profit hackers, or even just some 8 year old who stumbled on the right tool or zero day.
In my experience, these kinds of things tend to be omnidirectional, and include tons of collateral damage.
