She just had gravelly, right from the soul kind of voice.

Janis Joplin is second only to Bob Dillon as an overrated performance artist. For the most part the poetry was there and the band did the job well enough, but the delivery just left so much to be desired. Sadly Joplin isn't covered as much as I'd like as her take on the 70's blues movement in mainstream rock might have given us an entirely different 80's pop scene (or not given the influence of synth pop).

All of that just to say that both Joplin and Dillon were decent enough writers and the radio in my area doesn't play enough songs in a minor key lamenting the loss of this or that.

Kris Kristofferson penned Me and Bobby McGee. Janis recorded it just before she OD'd on smack. It was a posthumous hit for her. Janis was a performer, not a singer/song writer. She cranked out a few, Mercedes Benz and Down On Me, but the majority of her standouts were not her own.

I was unaware of that. Thank you for the correction. I guess I just don't care for her delivery and never looked into who wrote her songs.
