This song came to the Jefferson Airplane when they hired Grace Slick to be their singer. Prior to Slick, they had been using a female folk singer, but Kantner wanted a different sound. Grace had been performing "White Rabbit" in her band, The Great Society (ironically named after Lyndon B. Johnson's massive welfare program, which has destroyed America's inner cities). Both "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" were brought by Slick to the Airplane, and these two songs were the Airplane's only two breakthrough hits.
