Cochran released this in 1959 and wrote this with the help of Sharon Sheeley, who became Eddie's girlfriend, and his elder brother Bob Cochran. Sharon met Eddie when she asked him to record one of her songs. There weren't many female songwriters at the time, but Sheeley's first effort, "," became a #1 hit for Ricky Nelson.

"Something Else" was written on the back of a match book. Veteran studio drummer Earl Palmer played the same drum beat on "Somethin' Else" as Charles Connor did on Little Richard's "Keep A-Knockin'". However, Eddie Cochran was unaware that Sheeley wanted to duplicate the drum sound of the Little Richard recording.

On April 17, 1960, Cochran was killed in a car accident at age 21. Sheeley and Gene Vincent were also in the car and injured in the crash, but Cochran went through the windshield.
