There are four songwriting credits on the track: Gilmour, lyricist Anthony Moore, producer Bob Ezrin, and keyboard player Jon Carin, who did session work on the track. Carin came up with a chord progression that ended up on the track, so Gilmour generously included him in the credits. Carin didn't expect it, as session players are generally considered "work for hire" and rarely included in these lucrative credits. He said it "just shows you what kind of guy David is."
Gilmour took quite an interest in flying and vintage aircraft, later starting a company called Intrepid Aviation. The dubbed over voice of pilots talking is actually a recording of drummer Nick Mason during a flying lesson. According to his book Inside Out, both Mason and Gilmour were terrified of flying but eventually got their pilot licenses.

Flaps, set, ten degrees
Engine gauges and suction, check
Mixture set to maximum percent, recheck
Flight instruments
Altimeters, check both
(Garbled word) on
Navigation lights, on
Strobes, on
Confirm three-eight-echo ready for departure
Hello again, this is now 129.4

Just hand the power gradually, and it..."
